Publisher’s summary quoted above is quite good description of content. I can add that variants and production series ends on page 20, technical description and serial batches + specification of P-51D-5-NA ends on page 32. Main part of the book, excellent walkarounds, are on pages 33–124 and last 28 pages are filled with colour profiles.

Quality

This part of review in case of MMP’s book is boring: high quality of paper and print. Good idea is printing 1/72 scale plans at the beginning of the book, it makes them much easier to use during kit building.

Scale plans, drawings, photos and profiles

Most scale plans are drawn in 1/72 scale. Few plans are not in that scale but it’s really hard to fit 1/72 side view of G8N1 Renzan on A4 paper sheet. Modellers should be happy with various plans and additional drawings like instrument panel of M6A Seiran or transport trolleys for Ohka Model 11 or Model 22.
Book contains 198 photos and many of them are really unique. Together with scale plans should be great help for modellers and researchers. Colour profiles by Zbigniew Szeremeta can be good source of inspiration, especially for items planned and not build before the VJ-Day.

Plans were drawn in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scales. Smallest were published on pages 8–16, larger ones on special A3 format insert. Main part of scale plans are drawings of P-51D-15-NA variant, additional profiles of P-51D-5, P-51D-25 and reconnaissance F-6D were published too.

Most schemes included in book were copied from original manuals. Colour profiles of few dozens od Mustangs are gallery of users. Of course many of them are US ones but you’ll find Australian, British, German, Israeli or even Yugoslavian ones. Polish Air Force is represented by Mustang IVA from 303 Squadron.

Photos can be grouped in few sections: archival photos (mainly WWII era), details of many preserved aircraft and last but not least photos made during restoration of P-51D-30NA 44-74452 made by Midwest Aero Restorations. These photos are invaluable help and inspiration for all modellers.

Summary

Highly recommended for all enthusiast of technical history of WWII aviation. A must have for all modellers building their P-51Ds, especially P-51D-15-NA.
